Septic Tank Maintenance
Maintaining a healthy septic system is very important. If you have a problem with your septic system you could find yourself with a major stinky problem. There are a few simple things that you can do to maintain a healthy septic system. Some of the steps are very simply, and others take a little bit more effort or money. Here are a few ways that you can maintain a healthy septic system.
Garbage
One of the biggest problems that people run into with their septic system is major clog. Most of the time the backed up septic system is the result of garbage being put down the drain. It is not uncommon to find wrappers, condoms, and other items blocking a septic system. Another major problem that septic systems go through is food. If you are constantly using your garbage disposal, you could be really hurting your septic system. Remember that everything that you flush or drain is going to go to your septic tank. So, be careful what you flush or drain, and make sure that it is biodegradable.
Liquid Cleaners
If you are experiencing a clogged drain, be careful when you reach for the liquid drain cleaners. These drain cleaners are very effective when put down your drain, but they can also do a lot of damage. Liquid drain cleaners are very basic, PH well above 7, and can therefore kill the bacteria that are in your septic tank. The bacteria that are in your septic tank play an integral role in breaking down the sewage. So, if the bacteria are killed off, the system is going to have a much harder time trying to break down that sewage. Instead of using liquid drain cleaners, you may want to use a pipe snake for a clog. If you are trying to knock the mineral buildup from the sides of your pipe, a plumber can use a jet cleaner.
Pump
Think of the last time that you had your septic system pumped. If you are like most people with a septic system, you do not remember when the last time the system was pumped. Over time there can be a lot of buildup in your septic system. If you want your system to run properly, you should get your septic tank pumped at least every other year from a company such as Parrish Portable & Septic. This will allow the system to re-set. Pumping the system will also get all the garbage out of the system.
